Structure to Light: An Introduction to Architectural Photography with Janna Ireland

2-day workshop:
Saturday, April 10 and
Saturday, April 24, 2021
10am-1pm PDT

In this workshop, students will learn the basic tenets of architectural photography. What counts as architecture? How can photographers record and interpret architecture in meaningful ways? Students with any kind of digital cameras--from smartphones to professional level cameras--may participate in this workshop.

In the first session, we will review and discuss work by established architectural photographers and go over manual camera operation, RAW capture, and basic digital editing. In the second session, students will present a project completed in the two weeks between sessions for critique.

Janna Ireland was born in Philadelphia, but has chosen Los Angeles as her home. She holds an MFA from the UCLA Department of Art and a BFA from the Department of Photography and Imaging at NYU. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and internationally. Her photographs have appeared in numerous publications, including Aperture, The New Yorker, Harper's, Frieze, Camera Austria, the Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times Magazine. Her book, Regarding Paul R. Williams: A Photographer's View, was published in 2020 and shortlisted for the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook award.
